2044 – artificial intelligence has taken over and emotions are seen as a threat. In order to get a more interesting job, Gabrielle undergoes a procedure that cleanses her DNA of feelings associated with past experiences. In the course of the procedure, she remembers her former lives – 1910, 2014, 2044. A melodrama with elegant costumes, set in 1910 in the Parisian salons of high society, as if from the pen of the novelist Marcel Proust. A cool thriller about urban loneliness in Los Angeles in the mid-2010s. And a melancholic science fiction film, about two decades away from our present. "La bête" is all of these things – and great on all three narrative levels.
