To begin the walk, take the Älplibahn mountain railway from Malans, which is operated by volunteers and supported by many co-operative or club members. The Älplibahn’s non-profit aim is to maintain the mountain railway for operation during the summer through a limited number of tourists and a modest pricing policy.

Initially the ascent to the Vilan summit leads through woodland, then across picturesque alps and finally along a beautiful mountain trail. The popular summit destination offers magnificent panoramas over the Rhine Valley, the Churfirsten and other well-known mountains such as Piz Bernina, Piz Kesch, Piz Linard, and Ringelspitz.

The descent from the summit leads eastwards on a well-signposted trail along the ridge towards Sadreinegg and then across Alp Sadrein to Weide-Brunnen Luvadina with magnificent views over Prättigau. The trail continues through sparse forest, merging into the Alpstrasse, which ascends to the Jeninser Obersäss and leads back to the Älplibahn summit station.
