Grosse Geste
Description
Hardly any other solo concerto begins as spectacularly as Peter Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 in B flat minor. Four descending notes in the horns are answered with a tutti beat in the orchestra, before the solo piano enters with strong, ascending chords after two repetitions. A grand gesture right at the beginning – the wide-ranging theme lies underneath in the string instruments. The pianist Boris Giltburg is considered an expert on the Russian repertoire of the late 19th century. Technical brilliance meets a wealth of timbres at Giltburg. These can also be experienced in Alexander Glazunov's melancholic 4th Symphony, Sergei Rachmaninoff's airy Scherzo in D minor and Robert Schumann's contrasting orchestral work "Overture, Scherzo and Finale" in E major. The Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen is also a master of grand gestures – but the small detail is not neglected, but worked out vividly.
The concert is dedicated to Hansjürg Saager and is made possible by the EXEKIAS Foundation.
